Google launches Gemini 3.8 Live with real-time voice reasoning
Models are available now via the Gemini API, Google Workspace, and the Gemini app.
Google shipped two new voice models this week: Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking. Both are available immediately through the Gemini API, Google Workspace, and the Gemini app. Google calls them its most advanced live dialogue models yet.
The capability gap being closed here is interruption handling, language switching, and parallel reasoning during live voice sessions. Until now, voice agents broke when a user changed direction mid-sentence. These models are designed to keep reasoning in the background without pausing the conversation. That matters for enterprise voice agents, where dropped context is a trust problem, not a UX inconvenience.
Google is explicit that this release targets developers and enterprises building production-ready voice agents. The distribution move is through Workspace and Search, not just the API. Watch whether operators in customer service and knowledge work begin replacing screen-based workflows with voice agents built on this stack. That is the signal worth tracking, per Google's own blog announcement.
Analysis
Capability is not the story. Distribution into Workspace and Search is. The operator who pays for voice agents next quarter will not build the plumbing; they will rent it from Google.
