Twenty data protection authorities signed a joint statement on building trustworthy data governance frameworks for AI, according to CNIL. The signing took place at the Global Privacy Assembly in Seoul, running September 15 to 19, 2025. Signatories include regulators from Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Korea, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, among others.
This is a coordinated signal, not a binding rule. But when twenty DPAs align on shared principles, labs and operators face a common regulatory grammar across markets. Divergent national rules are the compliance cost that slows enterprise AI deployment. A shared framework reduces that friction, at least on paper.
Watch whether this statement shapes enforcement priorities or stays declarative. The gap between a signed joint statement and a regulator opening an investigation is wide. What narrows it is adoption into national guidance.
