EU Tightens AI Oversight With Biometrics, GPAI Taskforce Moves
Three enforcement-adjacent moves arrived in the same month, per Dentons' AI and GDPR Monthly Update. Prague's High Court authorized real-time remote biometric identification at airports, permitting AI to match people against a reference database for security and criminal investigation. France's CNIL released a demo tool that maps the origin and reuse of open-source models on HuggingFace.
Separately, the European Commission established a Signatory Taskforce to support implementation of the voluntary Code of Practice for general-purpose AI models. The AI Office leads it. Its mandate: uniform application of the Code, interpretive documents, and a forum for technical exchange among signatories. This is the scaffolding that turns a voluntary code into something with teeth.
Watch the GPAI Taskforce closely. Voluntary codes become de facto compliance floors when regulators start publishing interpretive guidance. Any operator deploying a foundation model in Europe should track what the Taskforce classifies as an obligation. The biometric ruling matters too: it sets a judicial precedent for real-time identification in public spaces.
